Ny Tanintsika has supported the local people of Ambohimahamasina, bordering the forest corridor between Ranomafana and Andringitra, for their community-based ecotourism initiatives. Proud of their culture and environment, they are keen to share it with visitors to the area. Numerous trails have been developed along with guiding services, including a 3km trek to the top of the impressive Angavoa cliff, treks into the community-managed forest of Itaolana and treks across to the eastern side of the forest where Ny Tanintsika also works. It is an opportunity to see the unique flora and fauna of the area, to learn about Madagascar’s sacred mountain Ambondrombe or to learn more about the people of the area.
Visitors can be accommodated either in community homestays or at the Soamiray women’s weaving cooperative’s centre, that has 3 dormitories with a capacity to host 20 people in relative comfort. Members of Soamiray can also concoct delicious Malagasy dishes, with dining facilities available in the centre’s refectory.
Communities are supported in their efforts to establish tree nurseries, to reforest and conserve the remaining forest, including setting-up fire-breaks to prevent the spreading of bushfires.
Community support is provided via Ny Tanintsika’s field agents, including training on management of ecotourism sites.
