After the passage of cyclones Batsirai and Eminati which hit the eastern regions of Madagascar, the district of Vohipeno is strongly affected: fruit trees, coffee trees, clove trees, vanilla trees are devastated to 90%. Vohipeno experienced a major flooding for a week after the two cyclones, the road that connects the commune of Anoloka and the district capital was washed away; the rice fields are silted up as a result and no harvest is expected. The lean period in this region runs from February to April and breadfruit is the main food of the majority of the population, while this fruit was almost destroyed by the cyclone.
Poorer people earn money from the daily work they do with wealthier families. Yet, after the cyclone, even the wealthiest families have lost their crops, even fields of cultivation and can no longer pay their workers.
Funded by Sign of Hope, 300 households from 7 villages in Anoloka commune are supported in order for them to take immediately their daily life in hand : Ampasimasay, Mahavelo, Vohimary, Irotra, Vohitramba, Vohitsivalana, Lazamasy.
200 households received 75.000 Ariary per households per month during two months. The money received helped the families to buy foods (rice, vegetables) until the crops harvest. The one part of the money also helped them to fix their house which is destroyed during cyclone hit.
To help households also, we distributed foods and seeds for 300 households.

It consists of rehabilitating together small infrastructures or rice field destroyed or sanded by the passage of the cyclone, so that the communities can resume their normal lives. Through community work 550 meters of roads and water channels were cleaned. Rice fields sanded during cyclone passage were arranged.
In general, the community work focused on the road and canals because it is easy to do and do not need big materials.
Villagers started to rebuild or renovate the collapsed latrines during cyclone passage. 124 new latrines built. Rehabilitation of latrines was held through community work for all fokontany. With help of traditional leaders, the community work was realized after a planning established. Some latrines were just built to be used on short time, but others required reconstruction. Latrines wall are made by wood and the roof made by leaves. The most important work is the making a hole for the latrines which is completely destroyed. They can rebuild 3 to 4 latrines per day.
